Seascapes Gallery

The oceans touch us all, from salty waves lapping by coastal peoples to weather patterns influencing landlocked cultures. Yet, there is something more drawing us to the sea—an intangible force. Perhaps that instinctual connection comes deep within our roots—from our primordial ancestors who called the ocean “home.” This gallery travels to different oceans, countries, and too many islands to count. Unfurl the sails, set the course, and let’s see what lies beyond the horizon!

The Seascapes Gallery captures many aspects of the sea: from the expansive vistas to minute marine creatures, from fishing fleets to coastal villages (learn more about the underlying science by visiting the Marine Biology page). Please note that some subjects span several categories (e.g., lighthouse images could be filed under either “Seascapes” or “Architecture”). You may wish to view multiple galleries for related images, especially the Panoramas Gallery, which has additional coastal images in file sizes conducive to extra-large prints.

No single picture can incorporate the entire essence of coastal Ireland. This scene of Dunmore Head, Dingle Peninsula includes some major elements in Irish vertical zonation. From the rocky summits, bog growth soon envelopes the land. As the slope angle flattens, pastures and human dwellings emerge. Inevitably, land greets the sea, either through resisting stone cliffs or complacently shifting sand.
